Why Jute Lost, and Why It Comes Back

Bangladesh had a global export before it had a flag. Then polypropylene arrived. The looms never quite stopped.

In 1947 the delta grew roughly eighty percent of the world's raw jute. Narayanganj was a port city built on a single fibre, and the mills along the Shitalakshya ran shifts around the clock. The fibre had no serious rival: nothing else was strong enough to sack a hundred kilos of grain and cheap enough to throw away.

Polypropylene changed that in the space of a decade. Woven plastic sacking was lighter, waterproof, and priced against crude oil rather than against a monsoon. By the early 1980s the mills were closing. A generation of weavers went into garments, and the phrase 'jute is cheap' hardened into something everybody repeated, including the people who grew it.

But cheap was always a statement about sacking grade, not about jute. The fibre itself is a bast fibre, closer in structure to linen than to anything synthetic. Woven tightly at twelve ounces rather than loosely at six, bound at the edges with cotton and finished with brass, it behaves like a serious material. It takes a natural dye beautifully. It patinas.

The environmental arithmetic is now the inconvenient part for the other side. A hectare of jute fixes something like fifteen tonnes of CO₂ across a 120-day cycle, needs no irrigation beyond rain, and takes very little pesticide because the crop grows faster than most things that would eat it. At the end of its life it composts in a year or two. Polypropylene sacking does not decompose; it fragments.

None of this makes jute automatically premium. Craft does. What our atelier in Narayanganj sells is not the fibre — it is the tension of the weave, the squareness of a corner, the fact that a strap is set with a stitch pattern that will not tear out at the shoulder. That is the part the mills never bothered with, because sacking did not need it.
