Shipping a Basket Across the World

The uncomfortable question every ethical brand gets asked: does air freight cancel the point? We ran the numbers.

It is a fair challenge. A basket woven in Pirojpur and flown to Portland has an emissions cost that a mass-produced polypropylene bin bought locally does not. Pretending otherwise would be exactly the kind of thing this journal exists to argue against.

Here is the arithmetic as we understand it. Air freight from Dhaka to a North American hub runs roughly 0.6–1.0 kg CO₂e per kilogram of cargo. A large hyacinth basket weighs about 900 grams, so call it one kilo of emissions door to door, plus packaging.

The plastic alternative carries around 6 kg CO₂e per kilogram at manufacture, weighs about the same, and is replaced roughly every three years because the polypropylene goes brittle in sunlight. The woven basket is a twenty-year object. Over two decades the comparison stops being close.

That said, the honest response is to reduce the freight rather than argue about it. Three things we do: consolidated sea freight for our wholesale and bulk orders, which cuts the per-unit figure by around ninety-five percent; regional 3PL stock in Rotterdam and New Jersey so most retail orders travel the last leg by road; and flat-pack or ships-unfilled construction wherever the object allows, which is why our kantha pouf arrives as a cover.

We publish the freight mode on every order confirmation. If a piece went by air because you wanted it in five days, the confirmation will say so.
